The 1871 Sydney Gold Cup  by Christian Ludwig Quist

I purchased this at auction acting on behalf of the Powerhouse Museum, Sydney. On being asked I told the Museum what I thought that the cup would fetch, they agreed but could only find the funds for a lower price, for that was all the Trustees would authorise. I agreed to make up the difference to my figure should the cup make more.

Sold with the portrait of the winning horse it was a must have item for any museum collection, except the National Gallery in Canberra, who at that time showed no interest under their decorative arts curator Robert Bell.

It was purchased just within my estimate.
